Britons paid a record £16.7bn in capital gains tax in the 2021-22 financial year on the back of rising asset values and house sales.

According to official data published on Thursday by HM Revenue & Customs, there was a 15% year-on-year increase in the amount of CGT liabilities due to the Treasury.
