Plans to turn Cardiff’s Old Brewery Quarter into Wales’ first ‘Covent Garden-style’ development have been given the go-ahead by Cardiff council.
A joint venture between Mansford Holdings and brewing group SA Brain & Co is to transform the site into a £15m mixed-use café quarter (pictured) centred around a piazza. The 7,897 sq m (85,000 sq ft) scheme will comprise seven retail outlets, cafes/bars, nine restaurants, two office floors and 48 loft-style apartments.
Charles Knight, executive director of Mansford Wales, said: “This scheme has been designed to retain the character of the important buildings as well as giving new style and vitality to the lower end of St Mary Street. It will provide an exciting mix in one vibrant quarter, which has never been seen before in Cardiff – or indeed Wales.”
Work is due to start on site next month, with completion expected in December 2001.
Powell Dobson Partnership has been appointed architect for the site. The scheme is being marketed by EJ Hales and Stephenson & Alexander.
