Cardiff terrace bulldozed without planning consent

A Victorian crescent in Cardiff has been bulldozed without planning consent.

The façade of Guildford Crescent had been all that remained after the terrace of six buildings was partially demolished to make way for flats in 2019. A campaign had successfully persuaded council planners to impose restrictions to save the frontage.

But that has now been destroyed by Galliford Try, which is building a 30-storey apartment tower on the site.

Galliford Try submitted an application to demolish the façades on 17 August, on the ground that they were structurally unsafe.

But the demolition took place before the council could consider the application.

The local authority said the frontage’s removal was “completely unacceptable”, adding that the authority was exploring ways to hold the developer to account for the breach of planning consent.
