The Highways Agency yesterday awarded two more road improvement contracts worth £310m.
Carillion won a £65m contract to upgrade the A74 dual carriageway between Carlisle and Guardsmill into a three lane motorway and part of the M6.
Amec in partnership with Alfred McAlpine, Dragados and Kellogg Brown & Root won a £245m, 33-year contract.
The consortium will upgrade and operate a 53km section of the A1 in Yorkshire to motorway standard.
