Carillion and Sheffield council unveil Markets scheme

Developer Carillion and Sheffield council have unveiled plans for the £40m redevelopment of the Sheffield Markets sites in Castlegate. The 1.6ha (4 acre) area earmarked for the scheme comprises the vacant Sheaf Market Hall, the Broad Street car park and the Setts open market sites.

The development will be anchored by a 23,225 sq m (250,000 sq ft) leisure complex located between Commercial Street and Exchange Street. Warner Village has taken 5,574 m sq (60,000 sq ft) for a 10-screen cinema and NAMCO has signed up for a 2,508 sq m (27,000 sq ft) bowling alley. The leisure complex will link through to a covered shopping mall, health and fitness club, restaurants and multi-storey car park. There will also be a 6,967 sq m (75,000 sq ft) indoor meat, fish, fruit and vegetable market based at the new Market Halls site.

The current proposals do not include the Castle Markets, which are based on the former Sheffield Castle site, as further archeological works are required before designs for the area can be completed.

The joint venture’s proposals for the retail and leisure complex went on display in the city centre yesterday for a limited period. Work will start on site in the autumn, subject to planning permission. Completion is due in 2002.
