Carillion collapse sees hospital costs rise by 40%

Two hospitals that were being built by Carillion will be delayed by years and cost more than £2bn.

The anticipated cost to build the 646-bed Royal Liverpool Hospital has risen 42% to £1.1bn, according to the National Audit Office.

Meanwhile the estimated cost of the 669-bed Midland Metropolitan in Sandwell, intended to replace two hospitals, has risen 44% to £988m.

The hospitals were included in the £845m writedown of Carillion’s accounts in 2017, which set in train events that led to its compulsory liquidation owing more than £1bn in January 2018.
