Carlisle developer sets sail with £120m Barrow marina

Carlisle-based Story Group has been selected by urban regeneration company West Lakes Renaissance to work up plans for the £120m Marina Village project in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

The 90-acre scheme, part of the wider Waterfront regeneration scheme, will contain a mix of retail, restaurant and bar units, 650 homes, a 350-berth marina and a sports ground.

No formal development agreement has yet been signed but Story is expected to take forward a scheme subject to further negotiations and confirmation of funding.

Bob Pointing, chief executive of West Lakes Renaissance, said: “With Barrow’s economy very much on the up, thanks primarily to investment in the town’s world-class naval industry, we remain confident this vision will become reality.

“It is also satisfying that we will be working with a Cumbrian developer with a good understanding of the needs of Barrow.”

Story Group includes rail and construction businesses as well as Story Land and housebuilder Story Homes.

Its projects include residential developments around Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

The Marina Village development is expected to take around 10 years to complete.
