Carnforth station in Lancashire is being restored at a cost of £1.2m.
The setting for the classic film Brief Encounter is being converted into a museum, tea-room and information booth.
British Rail is spending £500,000 repairing the rails and local tourism officials hope mainline trains on the way to the Lake District will once again stop at Carnforth.
