Carpetright to rise again in N17

Proposals for a new Carpetright store in Tottenham, to replace the one destroyed in riots last summer, have been approved.

Threadneedle Pensions, owner of 638 High Road, N17, has been given the go-ahead to reconstruct the 1930s building back to its original deign, with 26 flats across three floors above the store.

The property was knocked down in August last year after it was set on fire by rioters.

Councillor Alan Strickland, cabinet member for economic development and social inclusion, said: “The return of this iconic landmark will stand as a symbol of Tottenham’s recovery. It will show the local community, business leaders and the world Tottenham’s determination to emerge stronger than ever from the devastating scenes we saw last summer.”

Following consent from Haringey council, work on the scheme will begin in the second half of 2012.
