Carrefour becomes Belgium’s largest food retailer

Carrefour, the French supermarket chain has bought all of GB, the Belgian food retailer in which it had a27.5% stake. This means that Carrefour is now the leading food retailer in Belgium along with Spain, Greece and France.

The deal leaves GIB, the holding company that sold GB, holding on to the property, which consists of some 520 shops. The portfolio is estimated to be worth between €744m (BFr30bn) and €868m (BFr35bn).

Carrefour recently sold 150 of its shopping malls to French property company Klépierre.
