The Cau steakhouse chain has been closed with the loss of 540 jobs after the collapse into administration of its parent company Gaucho Group.
Deloitte, which is handling the insolvency process, said that the 16 Gaucho restaurants would continue to trade pending a sale, but the 22 branches of the “significantly loss-making” Cau brand had closed immediately.
It said that Cau had suffered “material underperformance”, recording negative like-for-like sales for the past three years.
Matt Smith, joint administrator, said the closure of Cau was to allow the administrators to “focus on maximising the value achievable in the Gaucho business, which is profitable and underpinned by a strong brand”.
