Humberts’ summer auction at Sherborne in Dorset proved that the residential market is still strong for well-located properties, claimed auctioneer Nigel Jones.
An atmosphere of caution and slow bidding resulted in just three of the nine rural residential lots on offer selling for a combined £439,000.
“It was obviously disappointing not to sell all the lots offered,” said Jones, “but those which did showed that there is still interest in properties that are unusual in either accommodation or location.”
A listed five-bedroom former rectory on a 0.45-acre site at Preston, near Weymouth, sold for £180,000 and a two-bedroom house standing in 12 acres, known as Low Knap, near Halstock in Yeovil, Dorset, went for £179,000. The auction ended with the disposal of Hillcrest, a two-bedroom 18th-century cottage at Stour Row, near Shaftesbury, which fetched £80,000.
