Centros-Wimpey submits application for Kidderminster retail and leisure scheme

A consortium of developers and landowners has applied for outline consent to redevelop a 7.69ha (19 acre) site in central Kidderminster, Hereford & Worcester, as a 23,783 sq m (256,000 sq ft) retail and leisure scheme with housing.

The site lies to the west of Kidderminster’s core retail area within the Ring Road. The River Stour, which currently runs through the site, will be diverted along with a canal which runs along the western border of the site.

The major landowner is carpet maker Brintons which owns 5.26 ha (13 acres). Owners of the rest of the site are Wyre Forest Council (1.3 ha (3.21 acres)), British Gas (0.5 ha (1.24 acres)) and First Bus (1.2 ha ( 2.97 acres)).

The application was for:

  • 6,894 sq m (74,208 sq ft) of retail warehousing
  • a 7,649 sq m (82,336 sq ft) foodstore
  • 5,258 sq m (56,600 sq ft) of A1 retail
  • 2,524 sq m (27,170 sq ft) of unspecified “family leisure”
  • 1,458 sq m (15,694 sq ft) of pubs, fast food outlet and drive thru restaurant.

The site’s listed 4,645 sq m (50,000 sq ft) mill building, which Brintons currently occupies, will be refurbished as housing and speciality shopping.

Architect and planning consultancy Lyons Sleeman & Hoare is advising the joint venture on the planning application.
