Charity and social round-up: One small step for property…

By taking just one small step, the property industry has made one giant leap this week. Since 1 October, the 500 participants in LandAid’s Steptober have taken more than 73m steps – enough to walk to Sydney and back, with a brief detour via the International Space Station.

The challenge has even gone international, with steps being taken across the globe from New York to San Francisco to Dubai.

For the second week running, Leach Rhodes Walker’s Team CLG has held onto the top spot, and was the first team to reach 1m steps. Its other team – Team JB – is hot on Team CLG’s heels, with one stepper, Neal Emmerson, helping log even more steps as he ran the Yorkshire Marathon.

Grainger’s Charlotte Hopkinson highlighted Steptober’s overall theme of wellbeing on World Mental Health Day. She organised a lunchtime walk, clocking extra steps and boosting mental health at the same time.

Palmer Capital set its own mini challenge over the weekend, challenging the members of all their teams to log the most steps individually between 00:01 on Saturday and 23:59 on Sunday, with the winner receiving a lunch of their choice, purchased and hand-delivered by the loser. Sue Corran won with an impressive 47,595 steps logged.

With just a week to go, now is the time to get really competitive by staging your own mini challenges and competing for the LandAid prizes to be awarded on 1 November to the most successful team/company fundraiser; location outside London with the highest step count; individual with the highest step count; team/company with the highest step count; and wooden spoon for the lowest step count.

The challenge has now raised more than £60,000 – enough to fund at least four bed spaces for young people who have experienced homelessness.

The chief executives team – Hammerson’s David Atkins, British Land’s Chris Grigg, Landsec’s Robert Noel and SEGRO’s  David Sleath – have already raised enough to fund the renovation of a vacant two-bed property.
