Charity and social: West End kids get help from Shaftesbury

Shaftesbury has provided £510,000 of financial help to charities in the West End through its Covid Community Fund since it was set up last year.

The real estate investment firm has supported more than 1,400 young people through 17 grants to 12 organisations in the boroughs of Westminster and Camden. Recipients include Young Camden Foundation, which was awarded funding to create Heads-Up, an initiative aimed at safeguarding young people in the community with a focus on mental health, and Young Westminster Foundation, a transitioning project for year-six students in South Westminster moving to secondary school.

Keith Morgan, chief executive of the Young Camden Foundation, said: “The impact on mental health and wellbeing as a result of the pandemic is significant, particularly among young people. With the support of Shaftesbury’s Covid Community Fund, we have been able to help young people through the crisis, maintaining their self-worth, ambition and desire to make a positive contribution to society.”

Shaftesbury has also provided accommodation for NHS workers, office and consulting room space for a Soho GP practice and waivers of rent for tenants of charitable organisations.

Saint-Gobain staff dial into recycling drive for Hubbub

Saint-Gobain colleagues are championing environmental charity Hubbub by donating their old, unused smartphones to its Community Calling campaign.

Supported by O2, Community Calling seeks to assist 7m people in the UK who do not have internet access, while tackling the environmental impact of electronic waste. Saint-Gobain aims to be net-zero carbon by 2050.

Mike Chaldecott, chief executive of Saint-Gobain UK and Ireland, said: “We’re on a mission to make the world a better home, and supporting the Community Calling campaign is just one of the many ways in which we are working to achieve this.”
