Charity events 19 January

An excruciating adventure awaits two men who will row across the Atlantic Ocean battling the wilds of the deep blue.

Dan Howie, a chartered surveyor for Edgerley Simpson Howe, and Will North, a headhunter with Sheffield Haworth, will embed themselves in a seven-metre boat for 40-50 days, each rowing two-hour shifts around the clock to complete the 3,000-mile journey from La Gomera, Canary Islands, to English Harbour, Antigua, as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

Rowing under the name Team Atlantic Row 2013, the pair aims to raise more than £200,000 for Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia and Lymphoma and St Anna’s, a charity for orphaned children in Ghana.

Given this is recognised as one of the toughest endurance races in the world, the intrepid two are already in serious training, preparing to set off in December.

However, before they can raise money for their causes, at least £70,000 is needed to fund their expedition.

Newton Perkins Squash Tournament

It’s time to start burning up the indoor court again, with the 2013 Newton Perkins Squash Tournament, sponsored by Estates Gazette.

Last year’s trophy holders, Cushman & Wakefield, will return to defend their title, as will plate-holders Bird & Bird.

But newcomers Druces, GE Capital, Jackson Coles, Development Securities, Montagu Evans and Legal & General are preparing to knock the reigning champs right off their perches in a blaze of frisky footwork and daring drop shots.

Teams will be spread across six leagues, with matches beginning this month and continuing into late spring.

Care Construction Challenge

We all know how much our industry loves a physical challenge. Well, here’s one to sink your teeth into.

The Care Construction Challenge puts competitors through their paces with a marathon distance covered by foot, bicycle and kayak in Exmoor National Park in Somerset.

It is billed as a team-building opportunity and is a chance to explore one of the prettiest corners of England.

Entries are already flooding in, so this is also a great opportunity to out-muscle your fiercest competitors.

The 6 July event aims to raise money for CARE International, a poverty-fighting charity whose work includes constructing emergency and transitional shelter in humanitarian emergencies.
