Chartwell signs development agreement for next phase of Walsall’s Town Wharf

Chartwell Land and Walsall Council have signed a development agreement for phase II of the Town Wharf regeneration scheme in the West Midlands town.

Chartwell has submitted a planning application for a 14,680 sq m (158,000 sq ft) retail and leisure scheme with 700 parking spaces. The site is bounded by Green Lane, Blue Lane West and the canal’s Town Arm.

Chartwell’s 8,640 sq m (93,000 sq ft) phase I is now complete and work has started on a new gallery for the Garman Ryan art collection and a public house.

The Town Wharf scheme is a flagship City Challenge project. The masterplan for the scheme, intended to regenerate the Town End area of Walsall town centre and the Town Arm of the canal, was drawn up five years ago.

Chartwell is negotiating with local landowners and hopes to start phase II in a year’s time.
