Chartwell unveils plans for £40m Leicester Haymarket

Chartwell Land subsidiary Leicester Centre Properties (LCP) has unveiled ambitious plans for the £40m redevelopment of its Haymarket Shopping Centre in Leicester.

Half the existing scheme is to be redeveloped as 14,500 sq m (156,600 sq ft) of new retail space which will include a 3,688 sq m (39,700 sq ft) anchor store. A new mall stretching from the centre’s existing central square out to the refurbished bus station on Charles St will be lined by 32 new shops and kiosks.

On the upper levels, 6,235 sq m (67,000 sq ft) will be provided for commercial leisure uses such as a multiplex cinema, a health club, a family entertainment centre, restaurants and themed bars.

Niall Lindsay, a director of LCP, said: “Our scheme for the development of Haymarket dovetails with the city councils plans to develop a cultural quarter for Leicester in the St Georges area.”

The plans are subject to the city council securing a new home for the Haymarket Theatre.
