London mayor Boris Johnson has unveiled a £1bn riverside redevelopment incorporating the former Lots Road Power Station, SW3.
Johnson attended a ground-breaking ceremony at Chelsea Waterfront today as work gets underway to transform the eight-acre site of the former power station.
The scheme will open up 600 metres of Thames walkway – the longest stretch to become available to the public since 1904 – and provide public access to the historic building.
Hutchison Whampoa Properties’ approved plans for Lots Road Power Station scheme include 706 homes, 275 of which will be affordable. The power station building will be converted into 260 flats, 67 of which will be affordable.
A total of ten separate buildings, including the power station, three new bridges and two new public open squares surrounding the historic waterway of Chelsea Creek will make up Chelsea Waterfront.
Johnson said: “The towering Lots Road Power Station is a magnificent reminder of our Victorian heritage. Originally built to help power London’s underground over 100 years ago, it is now helping to provide the new homes and jobs necessary to secure this city’s future prosperity. It is fantastic to see this historic section of London’s riverside being restored and returned to the public.”
Raymond Chow, group managing director of Hutchison Whampoa Properties, added: “We find London an excellent place to invest, with the River Thames providing the perfect backdrop for our innovative, high-quality design. Like Montevetro and Albion Riverside before it, Chelsea Waterfront will become a key part of the local community and an iconic feature on the London skyline.”
