Jeremy Corbyn has said that he would use Chequers to house homeless families if he wins the general election.
The Labour leader was asked in an ITV interview if he would welcome a homeless family at the prime minister’s country retreat, near Wendover in Buckinghamshire.
Corbin replied: “I would indeed. We’re a country with 150 billionaires and we’ve still got people sleeping on the streets.”
Chequers was gifted to the nation in 1917 by Sir Arthur Lee, who hoped the “high and pure air of the Chiltern hills and woods” would “benefit the nation as well as its chosen leaders”.
But Donald Trump must be hoping Corbyn will abandon the country retreat altogether. Under the conditions of its gifting to the nation, the US ambassador will be given first refusal should the prime minister no longer wish to use the residence.
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell had previously said that a homeless family should move into 11 Downing Street.
