Chichester residents made miserable by new builds

Residents of Chichester in West Sussex have the lowest life satisfaction in the UK, despite its beautiful harbour, proximity to the South Downs and remarkable affluence.

Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show inhabitants of the home town of astronaut Tim Peake scored the worst marks when asked about their life satisfaction and whether they felt life was worthwhile.

Author Kate Mosse, who lives in the town, said that there was “real despair at the countryside being sold off for massive housing developments and sewage being pumped into the harbour”.

Around 10,000 new homes are planned for the area.

The islanders of Orkney reported the highest overall satisfaction with life.
