Chinatown scheme approved

Charing-Cross-shops-WC2Shaftesbury has won planning consent for the redevelopment of its Chinatown, WC2, retail and restaurant project.

The scheme, which faces Charing Cross Road and backs on to Newport Court, will reconfigure and refurbish the substantial retail, restaurant and bar space that Shaftesbury owns to create 32,000 sq ft of retail space and 13,500 sq ft of restaurant space.

The majority of the new restaurant space will be added to Newport Place and the company hopes the project will lead to the creation of an “enhanced dining destination” in the area.

In addition the shop frontage on Charing Cross road will be extended out to under the existing covered walkways to add more retail space.

The redevelopment won planning consent at a meeting of Westminster city council’s planning committee last night.

The group expects work to commence in early 2016 with completion in mid-2017.
