Church Commissioners boss to leave early next year

Gareth Mostyn, chief executive of the Church Commissioners for England, is stepping down after five years in the role. His successor will be selected through an open recruitment process. Mostyn will leave the Commissioners in early 2025 to focus on his non-executive career, having been appointed to a new non-executive director role at an NHS foundation trust, alongside his non-executive director role at Sovereign Network Group. Having joined the institution as chief financial and operating officer in 2018, Mostyn took the helm two years later. He has helped to shape several initiatives, including the £1.2bn 2023-25 triennium distribution to the Church, the investigation into the Church’s involvement in transatlantic chattel enslavement and the creation of the Church of England’s net zero carbon programme. Alan Smith, first church estates commissioner, said: “We are sorry to see Gareth go, but he leaves a strong senior team in place and his successor will join at an ideal time to help the board shape the future Church Commissioners as we implement the national church governance review changes.” Photo © Church of England
