Cineworld to buy Canada’s Cineplex for $2.1bn

UK cinema operator Cineworld will acquire Canadian chain Cineplex in a $2.1bn (£1.6bn) deal.

The deal will add 165 cinemas (1,695 screens) to Cineworld’s existing 786 locations (9,498 screens), and will make Cineworld the largest cinema operator in the US.

Mooky Greidinger, chief executive of Cineworld, said: “Cineplex is a great business. It is the number one cinema operator in Canada and is well positioned for further growth.

“The combination of Cineplex and Regal will create the leading North American cinema operator with unrivalled scale and opportunity.”

Last year Cineworld bought US cinema chain Regal for $3.6bn, in a deal first announced in December 2017.
