Cities investment overview: The North

A look at the projected growth of the regions with links to key investment opportunities and data for the main cities

The North has historically been the manufacturing centre of the UK – and little has changed.

From Nissan’s car manufacturing plant in Sunderland to Bentley Motors in Crewe, advanced manufacturing plays a major role in both the North East and the North West.

Meanwhile Yorkshire & Humberside, which has historically been a manufacturing centre itself, is now making inroads into finance.

Though the North is home to a number of major cities that are growing and making a name for themselves, such as Manchester and Liverpool, the key challenge for the region’s three metro mayors is connectivity.

The North still lacks easy east-west transport between the cities and HS2 will not solve everything.

But if the government follows through on plans such as the high-speed Northern Powerhouse rail development, new opportunities will certainly arise.
