US bank Citigroup has become the first company to make a donation towards the Garden Bridge, a proposed new footbridge across the Thames.
The bank has pledged £3m for the project, which is the brainchild of actress Joanna Lumley and designed by Thomas Heatherwick, who created the cauldron for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The bridge, conceived as a linear garden between Temple and the South Bank, is budgeted to cost £150m, although the trust wants to raise £175 to cover contingencies. The Treasury and Transport for London have each committed £30m to the scheme.
