The City of London Corporation has revealed £73m of funding, in the next phase of plans to relocate the Museum of London to a collection of historic buildings in West Smithfield, EC1.
This stage of funding by the City Corporation has been dedicated to the next phase in the relocation and regeneration plan for the museum. It will be used to help secure the venue as a key visitor attraction in the capital, which includes the appointment of sub-contractors to conduct building works, and some will be directed toward the adjacent historic buildings.
Once complete the project, which will see the museum move to Smithfield when Smithfield Market is relocated to Barking and Dagenham, will offer learning facilities for children and hopes to attract 2m visitors a year to the area.
The new London Museum is set to open for preview events and for a festival curated by Londoners in late 2025. It will formally open in 2026.
Chris Hayward, policy chairman at the City of London Corporation, said: “Cultural institutions like the Museum of London are essential to the character and vitality of our great city.”
He added: “This project is a key part of our Destination City initiative, which will support the City of London to become not just a five-day-a-week location, but a seven-day-a-week destination.”
Sharon Ament, director of the Museum of London, said: “We are moving forward at pace to create a fantastic new destination for the capital, and this funding is the next step in our journey to build a truly world-class museum.”
