City Lofts rises to challenge of Bridgewater Place tower

Landmark Developments and St James Securities have signed City Lofts to develop the residential element of the £100m Bridgewater Place scheme in Leeds.

The London-based residential developer will fill the gap left when Persimmon pulled out of the scheme late last year. Persimmon blamed the decision on the knock-on effect of its takeover of Beazer Group, but it was rumoured that it had got cold feet over developing the 30-storey tower following the 11 September attacks.

The tower, which will dominate the 500,000 sq ft (46,450m2) development, will be Leeds’ tallest building. City Lofts will create 158 residential units, alongside 227,000 sq ft of office space and 15,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space.

  • Eversheds is believed to have selected Bridgewater Place as the preferred scheme for its 130,000 sq ft office requirement for the city. The law firm is thought to have not entirely ruled out its other favourite contender, AWG’s City Square House, but Landmark and St James are said to be offering the firm three years’ rent free to tempt it into Bridgewater Place.
