City markets face move out of town

Three of London’s wholesale food markets could be moved to a riverside site occupied by Barking Reach Power Station after the City of London Corporation bought the 42-acre property for about £125m.

Billingsgate in Poplar, Smithfield, above, in Farringdon and New Spitalfields market in Leyton may be relocated under corporation plans.

The governing body of the Square Mile fought off strong competition for the land from logistics developers who wanted to develop warehouse space.
