City of London appoints interim chief planning officer

The City of London Corporation has appointed Gwyn Richards as interim chief planning officer.

Richards will lead the development management team of 40 – including planning, design, conservation, archaeology and transport officers. The team is responsible for managing and promoting development while also safeguarding the historic environment.

Annie Hampson OBE will retire as chief planning officer in March 2020, at which point Richards will take the post on an interim basis.

Richards has more than 25 years’ experience in central London authorities and is currently the assistant director of design at the corporation.

Alastair Moss, chair of the planning and transportation committee at the City of London Corporation, said: “Gwyn has already played a key part in the planning of many iconic developments in the City and is well respected across the industry.

“Gwyn’s expertise will help us transition smoothly following Annie’s retirement next month. He will now lead a strong and experienced team that will help to shape the future of the Square Mile.”

Richards said: “Over the past decade I have been committed to ensuring that planning in the City is radical, forward-looking and proactive. This is essential to ensure the City is a successful and inclusive place for all.”
