The City of London Corporation has launched a public engagement phase on its planning and transport development plans for the Square Mile.
If approved, the proposals – which are known as “City Plan 2040” and the “Transport Strategy” – will provide an overall framework for upcoming development in the Square Mile up to 2040. It will outline priorities for local residents, businesses and open spaces.
Clear advice will be given on topics including the approach to tall buildings, heritage and culture, housing and transportation, sustainability and health and wellbeing.
The areas across the City that were identified as key areas for change include Fleet Street and Ludgate; Smithfield and Barbican; Thames Riverside, Pool of London and Blackfriars; the City Cluster and Liverpool Street; and Aldgate, Tower and Portsoken.
Multiple public consultation workshops will take place throughout June on the key topics and areas in the City Plan. The City Corporation has encouraged local residents, commuters, businesses and community groups to attend the workshops and help shape forthcoming planning policy in the area.
Shravan Joshi, chairman of the City of London Corporation’s planning and transportation committee, said: “The City is home to a diverse range of communities, and their involvement will be crucial in determining the future development of the Square Mile. I would like to encourage everyone who can attend these workshops, either in person or online, to do so.
“With the help of our residents and businesses, we will ensure that the City is the world’s most innovative, inclusive and sustainable business ecosystem, as well as an attractive place to invest, work, live, learn and visit.”
The public engagement will inform the next version of the City of London Corporation’s Local Plan, which will be launched for formal consultation in early 2024.
