City of London police station set for approval

Plans for a new hub for the City of London Police are set to be given the go-ahead by the City of London Corporation at a planning meeting next week.

The corporation is looking to convert retail space at the Middlesex Street Estate, E1, following the closure of Bishopsgate Police Station, EC2 in 2026.

It proposes to redevelop the site around the 23-storey Petticoat Tower. This would include a change-of-use approval for part of the basement, ground and first floor of six retail units into a “new operational base” for the police force.

Documents submitted to the planning committee by the corporation said: “Whilst the new headquarters building in the Fleet Street area will house a number of our units, it is deemed essential there is a base in the east of the City to maintain the high-visibility presence and response we currently have.”

The City of London was given the green light to develop a 525,000 sq  ft justice quarter at Salisbury Square in 2021, which will include law courts and will serve as the new home of its police force.
