City of London ‘ring of steel’ extended westwards

The City of London’s “ring of steel” will increase by 50% on Monday. Controls on cars and lorries entering the City will be extended westward. It will cover an area which includes St Paul’s cathedral, St Bart’s hospital and the Barbican.

The £250,000 scheme will bar through-traffic, except for cyclists, from seven small roads near Smithfield Market and Blackfriars. There will be police checkpoints in Queen Victoria Street, Holborn Viaduct Aldersgate Street and Ludgate Hill. The extension will last for an initial 12 months.
