City of London to push on with Bank Junction rethink

The City of London Corporation is preparing to review how the iconic junction at the heart of the Square Mile operates, in the latest part of a years-long scheme to make the area safer and cleaner.

The corporation’s ‘All Change at Bank’ scheme has been running for several years, aimed at reducing casualties at the busy Bank Junction, lessening crowds, improving air quality and improving the perception of the area.

Documents outlining the review, which will be debated at next month’s meeting of the planning and transportation committee, describe the area’s “history of serious and fatal collisions”. This led to traffic measures introduced in 2017 that closed the roads to all traffic other than buses and bicycles from 7am until 7pm each weekday.

Now, a new review will look into whether there could be a better balance of traffic mix than currently permitted along Poultry, Cornhill and Lombard/King William Street, as well exploring whether hours of restrictions should be altered.

Plans are already underway to restrict part of Threadneedle Street and Queen Victoria Street to pedestrians and cyclists only, as well as changing part of Princes Street to have a section of a single carriageway where it meets the junction.
