The City of London Corporation’s plans to shut Beech Street, EC2, to non-zero-emission vehicles will come into effect on 18 March.
The street, which runs under the Barbican Estate, will be shut to traffic other than zero-emission vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians, emergency vehicles and access to off-street premises for 18 months.
It is hoped that closing the street to normal traffic will improve air quality on the enclosed thoroughfare but also in the vicinity of the street, particularly around the entrances to Richard Cloudesley School and Prior Weston Primary School.
If successful, the closure could become permanent.
