CMA to consult on undertakings for £3bn pub merger

The UK’s Competition & Markets Authority has launched a consultation on undertakings proposed by Stonegate Pub Company to address competition concerns over its purchase of Ei Group.

Last year, the monopoly regulator opened a probe into the £3bn pub group tie-up. It said said that merger did not raise UK-wide competition concerns but warned the deal could damage competition in 51 local areas, resulting in local pub customers being put at risk of price hikes.

The consultation closes on 5 February 2020.

Ei agreed to a £1.3bn merger offer from Slug & Lettuce owner Stonegate in July 2019.
