Co-op halts online grocery plans

The Co-op has halted plans to launch an online grocery service.

The move comes a year after the group said it would test four different delivery models as part of plans to enter the growing market.

However, according to the Evening Standard, the Co-op had just one trial of a collection service in Stockport.

It is now reported to have opted to invest in revamping its smaller shops to compete with its high street rivals such as Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local, although the plans could be revived in the future.

The group has plans to refit 340 out of its 3,000 stores this year.

Last month the embattled mutual agreed to sell its chain of pharmacies to cash-and-carry firm Bestway for £620m.

Proceeds from the sale of the 770 pharmacies will help the Co-op cuts its £1.4bn debt pile.
