The 15-storey scheme, designed by 3D Reid, will be built on Co-op’s 20-acre site at Miller Street, near Victoria rail station.

The building will form part of the group’s Miller Street campus, for which an Arup-designed masterplan has already been endorsed by the council. The building will house 3,000 staff and serve Co-op’s retail arm.

The move will free up six older buildings currently occupied by the Co-op, which has been based in Manchester since it formed in 1863.

The buildings are New Century House on Corporation Street, Old Bank Building and Hanover Building on Hanover Street, Redfern Building on Redfern Street, Dantzic Building on Dantzic Street and Federation Building on Federation Street.

Co-op originally considered a number of sites around Greater Manchester for its new HQ, including the Fishdock site at Muse Developments’ Victoria Station project and Ask Developments’ Exchange Greengate, before settling on Miller Street.

The group plans to start development on-site in early 2010, with completion expected in mid-2012.

Co-operative Group chief executive Peter Marks said: “This is another important step towards our new head office building and it further underlines the continuing relationship between the Group and the City.

“We intend the building to reflect the continuing success and ethical values of the organisation in its design, construction and its relationship both with employees and surrounding communities.”

Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester city council said: “The iconic headquarters building is the clearest demonstration possible of a strong approach to quality and the creation of a place where people will want to work and visit.

“We look forward to continuing to work with The Co-operative on the delivery of the new HQ building, and on the wider masterplan for what will become a significant part of the regional centre.”
