Coffee shops and fast-food outlets have boosted their presence on the UK’s high streets more than any other retail sector over the past 18 years, according to CBRE research.
A twentyfold increase during the period has taken the number of coffee shops to more than 4,200, while fast-food outlets have tripled in number to more than 8,700, supplanting traditional businesses such as banks, pubs and shoe shops.
CBRE’s head of London leisure, Seb Howard, said the number of branded coffee shops in the UK had risen by 6% this year, a slower rate than in 2015.
