Sainsbury’s is studying the outcome of a judicial review which has seen its plans to build a supermarket in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, sent back to the DOE.
The decision is a set-back for the supermarket group’s expansion plans: Coleraine was to have been its first outlet of around seven in the province. The judicial review followed a complaint by rival Irish chain Wellworth’s and Boots the Chemist. They claim the DOE granted planning permission for the Riverside Regional Park site unlawfully.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury said the chain was still considering the outcome of the court case. She added that Sainsbury was only a tenant on the site owned by Stannifer Developments. It was therefore not party to the legal case put forward against the DOE decision to grant planning permission.
The DOE has stated that it would be lodging a Notice of Appeal within days.
