Colliers BTR head goes solo with new consultancy

Colliers International’s head of build-to-rent is leaving the agency to launch his own consultancy business.

Toby Nicholson

Toby Nicholson has set up Leander Royds Alternatives to advise companies on build-to-rent strategies. He will continue to work with Colliers as a consultant on certain client and project-led projects.

Nicholson worked in the residential market for more than 15 years, and was previously an associate director at JLL for more than five years.

He joined Colliers in 2015 to set up and lead its build-to-rent team. He has advised investors and developers including Balfour Beatty, Legal & General, Grainger, and Pension Insurance Corporation.

Nicholson said: “Ultimately, I will be buying, selling and advising on all aspects of build-to-rent nationally. Leander Royds Alternatives will provide top quality, service-led advice, engaging with developers, contractors, landowners and investors.

“Investment into the rental market is a high priority for a lot of investors and there is an acute lack of good quality, well-managed rental accommodation across the country. My clients will be looking to develop or acquire quality apartment and housing-led schemes.”

Nicholson’s exit follows the departure of head of UK residential Ashley Osborne, who left the firm in January after 15 years.

He was succeeded by former head of land and development Andrew White, leading the team with a focus on project marketing and sales, land and development, and build-to-rent.

A Colliers spokesman said: “We wish Toby all the best with his new endeavours.”
