Concerns raised over boutique hotel

34 London WallEnglish Heritage, the Victorian Society and City tailor Copperfield have tabled objections to a new boutique hotel in the Square Mile.

Representations on behalf of Copperfield claim that the scheme by Florala to develop a small boutique hotel at 67-71 Moorgate and 34 London Wall, EC2, (pictured) is unacceptable due to its impact both on the conservation area and the listed buildings at 67-73 Moorgate – the oldest surviving buildings in the street from the Smirke era.

The report, which has been submitted to the City of London Corporation, says: “The significance of 67-73 Moorgate as the sole surviving terrace from Moorgate’s original development has been officially recognised for over 40 years – from its listing in 1972 and the Save the City Conservation Study of 1976, to the City Corporation’s Continuity and Change study of 1984, and in every relevant heritage study between or since those documents.”

It claims that the addition of a fifth floor to 34 London Wall would have a “seriously negative impact” on the setting of the adjacent Grade II*-listed Armourers’ and Braziers’ Hall.

If the Florala proposals go ahead as currently configured it would involve the loss of Copperfield’s ground and basement shop at 71 Moorgate, which has been on the site for more than 32 years.
