Connection key to winning cities

MIPIM UK: Connectivity, diversity and planning are the key components for a successful 21st century city, according to the developer of the biggest real estate scheme in the US.

Speaking at MIPIM UK, Michael Samuelian, vice president of Related Companies – the developer behind New York’s Hudson Yards – said sustainable infrastructure would also encourage more young people to come to cities. “There is a connection between London and New York, and we want to keep getting young people to move to these cities” he said.

Martin Perry of Henderson Real Estate, said Edinburgh was an example of a sustainable model drawing investor interest. He said: “A city needs to be somewhere which encourages you to live, work, eat and play there.”

Infrastructure was also key to Sue Bruce, CEO of Edinburgh city council. “Clear vision, decision making and leadership are also key,” she added.

One of Edinburgh’s successes is its number of graduates from universities, which attracts important business investment to the city.
