Consortium submits Staffordshire new town plans

A consortium of developers has submitted plans to build a major new settlement on a site already earmarked by the government for one of its 10 mooted eco-towns.

Gleeson Homes, Banks Developments, Hallam Land Management, and Redrow Homes are planning a new settlement comprising 5,000 new homes on 700 acres of land at a disused airfield at Fradley on the outskirts of Lichfield, West Midlands.

The new settlement will be called Curborough and is actually in the county of Staffordshire on land identified by the government as the site for a possible eco-town however this proposal is not for an eco-town.

Plans include: a mix of homes including affordable housing, offices, shops, restaurants, three schools and a place of worship.

The scheme is similar to the eco-town proposal on the same site, which also includes 5,000 homes and schools.

But development consultancy RPS, which is advising the consortium, said the scheme pre-dates the eco-town initiative by a number of years.

Curborough could house up to 20,000 people when completed.

The plans are likely to be opposed by the local planning authority Lichfield District Council, which believes the site is in danger of being over-developed.

The land sits next to Fradley Business Park, which when completed will have created 7,000 jobs.

If the plans are successful, Curborough will be built in phased 15-year development.
