Construction falls despite avoiding lockdown

The construction sector lost momentum last month as Britain was subjected to tougher coronavirus restrictions.

The IHS Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index for the construction sector dropped from 56.8 to 53.1, worse than the 55 expected by analysts but still above the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction.

Although it is coming under pressure, the construction sector is exempt from the second lockdown in England.

Activity was being propped up by a buoyant housing market, BDO said.
