Construction growth falters as Brexit uncertainty puts projects on hold

The construction industry ended 2018 on a low note as a rout in business confidence held back demand for commercial building work.

Activity in the sector was the weakest in three months in December, according to IHS Markit’s purchasing managers index (PMI), a closely watched survey of senior executives at major construction firms.

The seasonally adjusted figure came in at 52.8, above the 50 mark that would indicate flat growth but below November’s 53.4 and a touch beneath economists’ expectations of 52.9.
