The construction sector expanded in September, with the reading in the Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index for the sector rising to a higher-than-expected 52.3 from 49.2 a month earlier.
Any reading above 50 indicates an expansion in activity. It is the first time the index has been in expansion territory since May, the month before the EU referendum.
Residential housebuilding drove the rise in the reading, although activity improved across all sectors.
