Consumer spending up 1.6%

Consumer spending accelerated in July, rising 1.6% on the year compared with a 0.9% rise in June, figures from Visa show.

Spending on hotels, bars and restaurants rose by 8.9%, the largest increase among the sectors surveyed. Spending on clothing and footwear was up 3.9% on the year, compared with a decline the previous month.

The data suggests spending is holding up despite the uncertainty following the referendum, although the growth levels are below those of the last couple of years, Visa’s UK and Ireland managing director, Kevin Jenkins, said.
