The cost of a room in a care home has risen by 5.2% over the last year to an average of more than £30,000 a year, according to a report by Prestige Nursing and Care.
The increase is around 10 times more than the rise in the average income of a pensioner, resulting in a weekly shortfall of around £317.
Private residents pay around 40% more for their care than publicly funded ones, and make up around two fifths of total residents.
