Cost of Scottish parliament building rises

The forecast cost of building a Scottish parliament rose rose to £65m, the Government has said.

The price will depend of which of the four shortlisted sites is chosen and on undisclosed additional costs, including architects’ fees, VAT and the acquisition of land. A decision about the winning bid is expected over Christmas.

Three of the sites are at the centre of Edinburgh and one is at Leith docklands. St Andrew’s Hill at Carlton Hill emerged as the most expensive option. The three new-build sites, at Leith, a car park at Haymarket, and opposite the Palace of Holyroodhouse on the Royal Mile which were all estimated to cost £50m. The site opposite Holyroodhouse has emerged as favourite to win the decision.
